This book is almost like a PDR of conditions & diseases, but it also has a lot of helpful holistic information of supplements to buy over the counter and help oneself. Muchas gracias a los autores por semejante obraContents was what I really wanted so the broken binding was disappointing but not a game changer. Beware, this is a 'heavy' book with small print. Not something you would normally hold on your lap for casual reading. But, that being said, it's truly a great wealth of information! There are informations in the book ( I called it enciclopedia) that you don't find in literature, because it is pratical experiencies. There are also new studies of cientists, during years and it longs to achieve the doctors in there daily work.I recomende it for every one. It's necessary that the population knows other forms of remedies to sthrengh your own imune sistem, your cells, to combat the disease. We need to treat and cure the disease, not just combat the synptoms (for exemple take medicine to stop headache)Another exemple that brings in the enciclopedia, it explains what you have to do when you are hospitilized, things I never heard in Brasil the phisicians do about hospital infection.I am brazilian not doctor just a lay person.Sorry for the espelling and writing. Many of the studies quoted are at the mice stage...not proven yet in people, yet the supplements are listed to take. Many of the studies quoted are a small study of people...not a broad enough spectrum to be solid science. This book takes all its individual supplements studied and then lumps them all as suggested supplements to take all together for a condition, but the combinations were never done together in a study. That is a recipe for disaster.I find the science to be insufficient science, but I'm sure it sells alot of supplements for Life Extension and other brands.I did pick up a few pointers, though, and did encourage others to buy this book for the many suggestions and hints that may be helpful with their easing their conditions outside of drugs or supplements. This book is pro drugs and has weak science for supplements. I expected more from Life Extension. Yet it is worth the read. You may find something helpful that makes a difference for you.Right on guys! This Volume 5 (ten years the senior of Volume 4) is an excellent update Edition. It is not comprehensive in nutritional implementation (somewhat weak at times) and does not address everything for diseases, but it is an excellent reference in itself for the protocols that are listed and can be trusted with science-based research to back up its claims. Nice layout structure for the book. Health conditions are easily located. Highly recommended. This price here cannot be beat! Thanks so much Dr. Gossard for your very hard work in putting all this together!{also, a great recent interview with Dr. Michael Smith at Life Extension Foundation. He is just the best!}Lord bless!I was looking for a book that was useful in medical practice as well as for those that are not health professionals. This book accomplished just that! I ordered two additional copies and had them shipped to family members to help them make informed health decisions! It is not a substitute for medical care however it provides insight into the disease process, conventional medicine and alternatives to conventional medicine.I bought this for my husband as a gift. It's super-extensive and explores all sorts of alternative (as well as conventional ) treatments. One thing that surprises me is the Life-Extension foundation's promotion of soy as a health food. It's not. But aside from that minor disagreement I have with the book, I think it's an excellent resource for staying healthy. The Life Extension Foundation actually backs up their recommendations with research and they clearly have a commitment to their recommendations being scientifically sound. Even if you're not interested in living abnormally long, this is a good resource for thriving as you age. This is an extraordinarily helpful book that with plenty of scientific information about staying healthy or, if you have some health problem, how to better deal with it.The book is from 2013, not 2008 as Amazon wrongly advertises. I did contact Amazon on that but the reviews team is very incompetent and lazy. This is important information because I wouldn't buy this book if it was from 2008 as there is so much new information since then. The book is published by Life Extension, an American company that has one mission : "to help you live a healthier, longer life."I believe 100% in them. Established over 30 years ago, they were the first ones to recommend low dose aspirin to protect against heart attack, for example, and they invested 140 million dollars in medical research looking for alternative treatments, giving people a reliable, scientifically based alternative to the usual pharmaceutical drugs prescribed by "couldn't care less" GPs.The book is written in good, understandable English but, being based on scientific studies as it is, there are parts which will be very technical. Just skip them. The good stuff is all there for you in plain English. It helps if you know what a cell is...I think that many people would shy away from this book because of its title. Please don't. This book is not only about diseases. It is also about being healthy. I am in my forties and have no health problems but find this book very useful. There are chapters about stress management, eye health, jet lag, caloric restriction diets, obesity and weight loss and so on. But most of the chapters are about diseases such as migraine headache, prostate cancer, Parkinson's, diabetes and so on.The excellent information about prostate cancer in this book will be useful to any man who is over 30. Over 30. Many people think that you should only worry about things like prostate cancer when you are over 50. Not true. The sooner you start to take measures to avoid this terrible killer, the better.I didn't buy this book. I got it free when I got a Life Extension membership last year. I would recommend that you check either the American site or the recently launched Life Extension Europe. I've just renewed my membership. I paid $110 and got $95 in free supplements...$95 that would actually be around $150 because as I member I get a good discount in purchases. This book is very handy but you can also get information on Life Extension site. The American site is much better, at this moment, than the European site. It has several articles with information about studies on supplements. One thing I like about the site and it is very difficult to see in other places is that they have a drawing with the size of the tablet/capsule what is very important information for many people.Do you care about your health? If you do, then order this book no matter your age ( Of course, disregard this recommendation if you are five years old or the like...)Scared about the Future of our NHS this is a must read for patients having undergone knee surgery at no time was a nutrition or healing diet given i was lucky as i have a good knowledge of biochemistry and nutrition ie my increased requirement for vitamin c for wound healing. The best there is. Read it. Do some or all of it. Live Longer. Maybe medicine will move it's model to preventative from reactive in your lifetime, until then there's this./\/\This is a detailed book but easy to follow & understand. I would have given it 5 stars but it doesn't cover Coeliac Disease, which I happen to have & would have been interested in reading about, but otherwise it's a most useful reference book.Best researched source of information about nutrition, health and disease prevention. I'd also highly recommend the Life Extension Foundation website and Life Extension magazine - see led.org
